Our Minions weekend!

This post is brought to you by Monde Mamon.

If you're a parent of young kids, you probably have seen the Minions movie by now. I mean, really, it's like the hottest thing in kidlandia these days. My kids, especially my second boy IƱigo, can actually speak Minionese.

How crazy is that!

Naturally, when Monde Mamon invited my family to watch a special screening at Greenbelt, we cleared our schedule and watched the Minions movie.

The movie was fun, more slapstick funny than smart funny the way the Despicable Me movies were. And we missed Gru. As a parent, I kinda worry about kiddie movies that glorify the bad guy: Wreck-It Ralph and Maleficent, for example, but they turned out to be heroes. Since Gru became a parent, he's really a good guy, which makes him a hero in my and my kids' eyes. With Minions, well, I won't spoil the ending, but because there was no real good guys here, there was no hero for my kids to look up to. I mean, sure, the Minions saved the day but they weren't heroes really. Still, the kids loved the movie, and they're too young to look for a moral (and, I'll be honest, I don't like movies with morals but that had to change when I gave birth to my own minions!) so watch Minions!

Anyway, we loved the Monde snack box we all got—a pretty white box with a chocolate chip muffin and two pieces of waffles. I wish I had gotten a picture but it was too dark in the theater by the time we opened our snack boxes. And we ate everything up immediately! Soooo good!

Then we brought home bags of Monde Mamon goodies and Minions lunch box and tumbler!

Their favorite part of the giveaways? Why, the Mamon-It-Yourself Minion kit, of course!

Three reasons why blogging isn't for everybody

I'm giving a little talk on Sunday about my blogging journey and I hope you show up! Powerbooks and Enderun's The Study said all I need to do is talk about how I started blogging, how I got my following, and how I'm earning from blogging. That's the general outline, but they said I'm free to talk about anything I like as long as it's about blogging.

So this past weekend, I've been trying hard not to be nervous for Sunday haha. I'm deathly afraid, to be honest. I have horrific stage fright. I don't suffer from stage fright when I do presentations for other things, say the magazine I used to edit or a project for a company. I'm very good at presentations. But when I started blogging professionally, I found it so weird to sell myself. Does anyone feel the same way?

Anyway, so I was thinking about my talk on Sunday and I remembered that all my friends who wanted to blog asked if I recommend it. You know, they'll ask, "Do you think I should blog?" Which always struck me as a strange question. It's like, "Do you think I should get married? Do you think I should have kids?" I think if you need to ask people about it, then maybe you know within your heart that it isn't for you. Here are a few reasons why blogging may not be for you.

But before I discourage you, let me encourage you!

Blogging exposes you.
Putting yourself out there attracts attention. Most of the time, it's a good kind of attention because you attract people who are interested in the same things you write about. Many of my friends today I met because of my blogs. They liked my humor, they liked my stories, they liked how I lived my life. And when I visited their blogs, I found that we were sisters from another mother—that's how alike we are!

But then sometimes, especially if you talk about things you believe in, you attract negative people. They will tear you down, criticize your beliefs, spread bad things about you, and basically find you so disagreeable, they can't help themselves. They just want to hate. Now, I have nothing against criticism. I'm not perfect and I'm not an expert. Plus, sharing how I live my life will invite opposing opinions. That's how life is. But I don't believe in hate. We can disagree but I don't understand why I have to be hated just because I don't live the way others do.

This used to bother me (like I would cry about it, and I don't cry easily!) until I realized that my blogs have brought me more love and friendship than hate. In fact, putting myself out there is one of the best things I've ever done! I have so many friends now. I have so many gifts from complete strangers who love my family! I gained work opportunities. My life is so much better all because I put myself out there.

But if you're the kind of person who can't deal with negativity, criticism and opposition, then think again if you want to blog!

Blogging may get you in trouble with your loved ones. Or your work.
This is mostly an issue with bloggers who talk about their personal lives or share their opinions on politics, religion and anything deemed controversial. So food bloggers, fashion bloggers and beauty bloggers are safe (correct me if I'm wrong!).

What you say online may affect your family or your employer. Both have happened to me. I had a big falling out with a member of my family because of something nasty that I said carelessly (the relationship is now healed). I also periodically get scolded by older family members for talking about my parents or for scandalizing them when I talk about sex (why does sex with my husband scandalize people?). So I'm more careful now, less reactive, less stupid, less emotional, less sex. At least online!

I also got in big trouble at the publishing company I used to work for because I gave a bad review of a product and the brand happened to be a major advertiser. I argued that my personal lifestyle and opinions shouldn't affect my professional life but I learned the hard way that, yep, they do.

I understand now that every part of my life affects each other, so I can't just blurt out everything in my head and heart. I must measure every word and judge how it will affect others, especially my family. I used to not care about these things because I thought that if I believed in it enough, then I must say it. It's my truth, and blogging is a terrific channel for expressing my truth. But now I understand my truth must be tempered with compassion, and sometimes compassion says, "Don't say it."

So if you're willing to ruffle feathers, go ahead and blog! But if that doesn't appeal to you, then start a blog that will be just fun but not personal. Examples are recipes, DIY, arts and crafts, home management tips, toy collections, and the like. These can still be incredibly successful!

Blogging can be incredibly intrusive.
Well, that's because when you share your life so publicly, you invite people into your life, whether you meant to do so or not. People who read your blog feel that they know you now and that they are your friend. In many ways, they are. I have so many friends now that I met online!

But there have been instances when a stranger came up to my husband and teased him about something I blogged about and Vince was smiling and all but inside he was uneasy because I'm the blogger and he's the private person so he felt invaded. My kids have also gotten weirded out when people will shout, "Hi Vito!" and try to pinch him. Oh, and I remember when someone blocked my way with a grocery cart at the supermarket and the woman greeted me happily. I was glad that someone I don't know was so happy to see me but at the same time, I felt, "Woah, you frightened me!"

I'm no celebrity. So I don't go around assuming I have fans. Oh haha that sounds so wild! But I do get thrilled when people say hi and ask for a picture or comment kindly about the kids. It doesn't go to my head; it goes straight to my heart! Thank you! So while I gave up a bit of my privacy (I don't reveal everything, you know!), the trade off is I allow more people to love me and my family. It's a beautiful exchange.

But if your privacy matters to you intensely, then maybe blogging is not for you.

Now if these reasons don't deter you from starting a blog, then you can drop by my talk on Sunday and learn more about blogging! I promise you it will be fun. And it's free! There will be a Q&A after so you can ask me anything you want about blogging!

Okay, I think I'll do a good job on Sunday. My nerves relaxed when I wrote this post. Now all I'm worried about is... What will I wear?!?

See you there!

Just checking in!

Good morning! This is me this morning right before I got up from bed, sent the boys to school and the playground, and had breakfast and devotions alone and in peace.

After my devotions, it was impressed on my heart that I should really blog with a higher purpose. Aside from sharing my life honestly and aside from earning money from it, I also ought to meet the desires of my readers (I'm calling you Loyal Readers from now on!), and that is they want to leave my blog with nuggets of wisdom and inspiration. I struggled with this request before, but I realized shortly thereafter that your request isn't a bad thing. It could possibly help me become a better wife, parent, human being! So let's do it!

Thing is, I'm struggling with blogging. Period.

First, two blogs. Keep both? Keep one? Make an entirely new one? I'm not updating Topaz Horizon regularly anymore. With my life now more focused on motherhood, it's my parenting blog Topaz Mommy that gets updated. It also gets more visits, obviously, and this blog's stats are on the decline. It's still high enough to attract sponsors but the numbers are definitely not up there anymore. I feel sad about this but I don't know what to do.

Second, my life is consumed by parenting so Topaz Mommy is what I enjoy updating. Should I just focus on parenting then and give up lifestyle blogging altogether?

Third, I also used to turn on my computer and just blog here when the writing bug hits me, but now that I'm older, I feel that that isn't wise anymore. I don't want to react to news anymore, to say my opinions while issues are developing. I've realized that many times I don't actually have an opinion because the issue doesn't affect me but because everyone is talking about it on Facebook, I'm forced to think about issues that seriously do not matter to me. What a waste of time and brain cells! And if I blog about my knee-jerk opinions (for page views since what's current will always attract more readers), then what a waste of time and energy, too!

So what does this mean? I don't know haha. I still like writing about current events, especially about entertainment! But then there's also a lot of concern now about images, and that putting credit and linking to source just isn't good enough. (In fact, I am slowly going through both blogs deleting pictures, even posts!, that have images I just grabbed from Google searches.) So if I can't afford to buy images of celebrities, then it's so corny of me if I talk about them and there are no nice photos!

So anyway, a few months ago, I asked on my Topaz Horizon Facebook page what I should do, and my readers said I should just keep one blog. Easier to maintain for me, easier for them to follow. Everyone said to ditch Topaz Mommy and blog about motherhood on Topaz Horizon because motherhood is on my horizon anyway. I'd do that except Topaz Mommy is so high up in the stats game so it doesn't make sense to me to give up the blog with the high stats! My friend, blog coach Martine de Luna, says that shouldn't be a problem. In fact, she says I can even start a new blog—new name, new look, new brand—and trust my Loyal Readers to follow.

I love my Loyal Readers!

Will you follow me when I create a new blog? Yes, when not if. The only thing stopping me is I can't come up with a name!

Then again, I'm so scared!

Anyway, I'm working on it. I'm thinking of a new name, a new look, a logo. I'm talking to someone about migrating all the content of Topaz Horizon and Topaz Mommy to that new blog. I'm also still setting aside money for the great migration and I don't exactly have a budget for that right now.

So no budget means I shouldn't do it haha.

Maybe I can just keep Topaz Horizon and move the Topaz Mommy content here, right?

I can't decide! But definitely I want a new look. Something cleaner yet happier. Wish me luck, Loyal Readers!

Biscoff Speculoos + Dairy Queen = LOVE!

This lazy Saturday morning, I was absently browsing my emails and I got this in my inbox today and I immediately sat up and napaluwa ang mata ko from their sockets. Two of my favorite things just got married!!!

Well, having an affair lang pala because this pairing is only available for a limited time!!!

My favorite bread spread of all time (my husband Vince calls it my drugs) Lotus Biscoff and my sentimental dessert (there's a Dairy Queen in St. Luke's Global City so my prenatal visits, our pedia visits and every time I gave birth, we all enjoyed a DQ!) joined together to create two delicious desserts:

The Dairy Queen Blizzard Cake in Lotus Biscoff flavor
To celebrate Father's Day, the Lotus Biscoff caramelized biscuit was combined with Dairy Queen’s Blizzard Cake for a cool (pun intended!) cake that will go perfectly with his coffee. Surprise the fathers of your life (well, the ones without diabetes! My father and my father-in-law both have diabetes so nope, they won't get this cake. Sorry, Papa Jules and Daddy Mon!) with this limited edition treat. The Dairy Queen’s Father's Day Speculoos Blizzard Cake is only available till tomorrow, June 21, 2015!

The Lotus Speculoos Blizzard
Until July 2, you can get to taste the special flavor of Lotus Speculoos Blizzard. It features the caramel taste and crunchy texture of Biscoff cookies together with the sweet and creamy Lotus Biscoff Spread. And just like all Blizzards, this flavor will also be super thick and creamy that it will be served upside-down and it will still defy gravity!

Both are available in your favorite Dairy Queen stores nationwide! We're definitely getting a Lotus Speculoos Blizzard this week with the boys. Hope to bump into you, dear readers!

The most stressful 15 minutes of this week

The last 15 minutes of Game of Thrones this week was the most stressful 15 minutes of my life this week. I think I almost died.

So watching the behind-the-scenes clip kinda takes out the horror.

"Row faster!!!" Vince told Jon Snow.

"They're not even rowing!!!" I yelled in terror.

I can't even. I think I'll have nightmares forever.

I can't wait for the next episode!!!

OOTD: Mango on me and my boys

This post is brought to you by Mango Kids.

When I had sons, I felt a little relieved that I won't have to become a gajillionaire to buy them clothes. I mean, they're boys. I don't need them to be fashionistas. I mean, it would be different if I had girls. I'd be buying my little girl a new outfit with matching shoes every week!!!

Boys are less pressure, style-wise. Boys are easy. And then I found Mango Kids. And then I decided I want to be mother-and-son cute with my boys! And then you have to check out these outfits I put together!!!
Vito is all about Batman these days, so he super loved this shirt. He also likes the black shorts because Batman equals black and so Vito loves everything black now, too.

We're both in gray tees and black bottoms! I like the tuxedo trousers. Very slimming! The formality of it strikes a balance with the message tee.

And I matched the coral handbag with the orange border of Vito's "Batman Crime Fighter" shirt.
On me: Message shirt with "I want to be your favorite hello, and hardest goodbye" design, Mango Basics Denims & Tees, P795; Black slim trousers, Mango Basics, P1,250; Pearl and studs necklace, Mango, P995; Coral handbag, Mango, P2,950. On Vito: Batman Crime Fighter shirt, Mango Kids x Batman, P795; Black shorts, Mango Kids, P1,450

We found our dream home... in Tagaytay

First, I need to say that my husband and I are very happy living in our condo. We're so happy here that nothing has moved us to move to anywhere else. Until we found this video from some blog link which was from a home magazine link and then now we can't stop thinking about it!

Yes, because of this video, we want to live in TagƓ at Tagaytay!!!

Though at first we were wowed by the larger Ara-al design, it's the humbler Adobe house that Vince and I fell in love with. We love everything about it! Even the weird fact that they put the master's bedroom outside the house. To us, we just thought we'd convert that to our office!

Since we're writers as well as parents, it's become increasingly clear to us that we love working from home because we're with the kids 24/7 and yet we desperately need a separate space for our work. And by separate, we mean a space that isn't just set apart by a closed door. We really need to physically go out of our house and go to another building! Adobe's strange plan of placing the master's bedroom apart from the main house solves that! It's so brilliant!

The master bedroom is OUTSIDE the house. Crazy. We love it!
Since we have boys, they can all share one room upstairs
while Vince and I stay in another.

We are obsessed with TagƓ. We want to live there one day. Ang mahal lang grabe. Mga 20M for such a small house in the province! And pre-selling pa yata ang price na yan huhuhu. Well, MaƱosa raw kasi.

We can totally see ourselves living in Tagaytay. We don't need to live here in the capital because Vince and I both work from home. For school, there's Xavier in Nuvali. The climate is cool, the vegetables are fresh, the air is fresh! The more we think about it, the more we want to up and go!

Sigh. Just when we thought all our dreams had come true, here comes a new one. Work work work again!

My new favorite beauty secret: OxyGeneo facials from Aivee Clinic

I'm 38 years old and my skin looks better than ever. Not perfect (yet!) because I was so bad to my skin forever. I only began a real skincare regime a couple of years ago and my skin is thanking me already. Makes me think of how my skin would've been like if I had always been masipag about cleansing, repairing, moisturizing and protecting! So if you're in your 20s and reading this, make sure to deep clean, apply eye cream and anti-aging serum, use sunscreen every morning and moisturize every night!

I also look so much better recently because of this amazing facial from the Aivee Clinic—the OxyGeneo. This is me at the relaxing treatment room at Dr. Aivee Aguilar-Teo's clinic (more like spa!) at Mega Fashion Hall. I'm just about to get my OxyGeneo facial, which is the BEST FACIAL I've gotten in all my 38 years. Let me tell you all about it!
Luxurious experience. From minty refreshments at the lobby to fluffy comforters on the treatment beds.

What is it?
OxyGeneo is called the super facial because it's three facials in one: exfoliation, rejuvenation and healing. It's microdermabrasion on the surface and then infusion of nutrients and then healing oxygen into the skin. So dead cells that dull skin are removed and then revitalizing ingredients are pushed deep into the skin with oxygen. The result is smoother, firmer, plumper, finer skin.

Here are just a few of the benefits:
  • Hydrated and plumped up skin reduces wrinkles and fine lines
  • Collagen is increased so skin is firmer and tighter
  • Skin takes on a glow

How does it go?
The facial starts with a thorough cleansing. Skin is then exfoliated, then undergoes radio-frequency treatment for noninvasive contouring and firming. It ends with skin infused with essential nutrients and oxygen. The oxygen increases and hastens the effectivity of the treatment.

I researched all over the Internet and OxyGeneo in most clinics around the world is offered as an exfoliation-oxygenation facial, so their facials last just 30 minutes. Dr. Aivee adds lots of extra goodies. Here's what to expect:

Step 1: Makeup remover is applied on face and neck to melt away makeup, dirt and oils.
Step 2: Cleansing gel is massaged on face and neck for a thorough clean.
Step 3: Steaming is done for a few minutes to open up pores.
Step 4: Ultrasonic exfoliation lifts away dead skin cells on the surface while loosening stubborn dirt.
Step 5: Pricking out blackheads and whiteheads. My friend Nicole Romero of Beauty & Sparkle says you can ask to skip this.
Step 6: RF treatment for tightening and firming skin.
Step 7: Brightening gel oxygenation to infuse all these skin-saving nutrients deep into the skin.
Step 8: Collagen mask finishes off everything!

You're advised not to rinse till the next morning so I always schedule my OxyGeneo facials in the afternoon so I can go straight home and sleep.

What happens after?
You'd think that with all those steps above, your skin would be staging an angry revolution. I thought that would happen, too, after I had a facial in another spa-clinic and was promised there was no downtime. Grabe lang. My face was swollen and hot and felt burned for two weeks!!! So whenever spa-clinics tell me there's no downtime, I get scared. But with OxyGeneo, wala talagang downtime! In fact, my skin was tighter and brighter after just one session. And it really felt pampered.

See below, my skin before my very first OxyGeneo on the left, and my skin after on the right. No redness, just a nice glow!

We really saw a difference just three days after my facial. My husband (who discourages me from getting facials after that time my face was burned off) was staring... and staring and staring at me. He said my skin was nice and glowing and that I looked younger. That was just after one session of OxyGeneo! You can bet that he encourages me now to get my OxyGeneo facials!

I'm now in the middle of my treatment. A treatment is best at 6 sessions. My fourth will be next week. But I already see results. My fine lines decreased. My skin is brighter, clearer, tighter. I think I look younger! For example, my crow's feet are GONE.

See below my makeup-less, no-filter, super close up photo. Usually, a smile produces three very visible lines at the corners of my eyes. But now, wala na.

I really super love my OxyGeneo facials!

I wish I had the time to do the facials properly. I should go every 7-10 days. But because of my packed schedule, I go every 4-6 weeks. I guess if I did the prescribed schedule, my face would be so much more fabulous. Sigh!

Okay, if you have any questions, please leave them below and I'll ask Dr. Aivee. She's super smart and super nice and very helpful. And super galing! I highly recommend you visit her clinics and see and feel for yourself the Aivee touch!

My first ever carbonara!

This post is brought to you by NestlƩ All Purpose Cream.

I'm a pretty good cook. My husband says that's one of the reasons he married me. But you know what? I've never cooked carbonara. The major reason is I prefer red sauce to white sauce. But now that I have kids, I figured I shouldn't impose my culinary preferences on them. Since my boys love pasta, they should try all kinds of pasta and sauces. I mean, all the pasta they know is spaghetti with tomato meat sauce! And, I'll be honest, they don't seem excited anymore when I serve them spaghetti.

And that's why I decided to cook my first carbonara!
I found a carbonara recipe online and I liked that the ingredients weren't so intimidating. Just bacon (my family's favorite!), ham, cheese, milk and cream. I confess that I have never cooked anything with cream before. That's the territory of my sister, Jacqui, who swears by NestlƩ All Purpose Cream. She says that it makes everything she makes extra creamy, adds a great texture, and makes food malinamnam. So for my first ever carbonara, I'm using NestlƩ All Purpose Cream!

Ingredients:
Half a kilo of noodles (I used spaghetti noodles so that it's familiar to my kids)
1 can evaporated milk
250 ml NestlƩ All Purpose Cream
1 can cream of mushroom soup
200 grams sweet ham (since my family loves bacon, I didn't use ham and just added more bacon!)
200 grams bacon
6 cloves of garlic, minced (the recipe called for a whole head but my kids don't like garlic)
1 onion, minced
1 tsp white pepper (you can use black pepper but I prefer white so that it looks nicer, no black spots on the white dish!)
Parmesan cheese, grated
Chopped parsley as garnish

How to spell my name

My first name always gets massacred. Francis. Franzen. Princess. Pansit. My last name is pretty simple but it's spelled as Salas, Sanchez and Sally. I'm exasperated but I'm used to it because I grew up with people wondering about my maiden name, too, which is Amper. Amper is not so common so people turn it into Amber, Ampere, Unfair. So I'm quite used to people not remembering my name. Then there are also a lot of people who can't forget my name because apparently it's unusual.

Frances Amper.

I think it's a pretty name. An intelligent name. I love my former name. I love it so much that when I got married, I didn't change my name. My husband is Vince Sales and his wife—me—is Frances Amper.

I also married at 30 and have built a career with that name so I didn't want to change my name. But on our first anniversary, Vince said he'd like for us to share the same last name. So, because I promised to love and obey, I changed my name to Frances Sales.

I use Frances Amper Sales professionally. Because of that, I guess that's why people address correspondence to me as such: "To Ms. Frances Amper-Sales."

My last name is just Sales. It isn't hyphenated. When you hyphenate a last name, that means you use the whole thing, so if we must be formal, I'd be addressed as "Ms. Amper-Sales." On invitations and letters addressed to us as a couple, the correct address is "To Vince Sales and Frances Amper-Sales." But my last name isn't Amper-Sales. It's just Sales. No hyphen. So you can write on the envelope, "To Vince and Frances Sales."
This is correct because Amper is my middle name.
This is incorrect because my last name isn't Amper-Sales.
Frances Sales.

In normal, ordinary life, that's the name I use. When I introduce myself to my kids' friends, teachers, to my husband's friends, I'm Frances Sales. In the last couple of years, I've dropped my maiden name, however. I now just tell people—whether I work with them or not—to address me as Frances Sales. It's simpler.

I like my name now because it rhymes. Someone even asked me if that was a stage name I invented. Haha, it's my real name, folks. I really married a Mr. Sales and I married him for love not because I wanted a name that rhymed.

Was it difficult for me to become a Ms. Sales, to let go of my father's name and take on my husband's name? Well, in the beginning, yes. I'm attached to Amper. I mean, I've been attached to it all my life! But I like that I changed my name. Here are my reasons:
  1. To my surprise, I actually loved that my new name made me feel like I am one with my husband. We're a team. That's what married life is all about!
  2. I liked how symbolic it was to drop my maiden name—it didn't just usher in a new life as a married woman; it also reminded me that I was leaving my family. By changing my name, I felt like life was going to be better because I'm a new person now. I have a new name!
  3. When the children came, I was happy I shared their last name. We were all the same, in the same team, one family unit. My new name told my kids that I belong to their papa, I belong to them, and that they all belong to me.
  4. I actually like that my name rhymes!
How about you? Did you keep your maiden name? Did you take your husband's name? Do you like your married name? Did life change when you changed your name? Tell me! I'd like to know!

Meet Topaz Horizon, the nail polish from Girlstuff

Summer is nearly over but I still can't get over the fact that I have a summery nail polish color named after my blog! Thanks so much, Girlstuff Forever! I'm so enjoying all these photos of the #BloggersEliteSummer Collection having a fun summer:

I also enjoyed it when nail art and nail polish enthusiasts posted their fabulous nails over on Instagram:

I'm so in love with the Girlstuff #BloggersEliteSummer Collection but I'm definitely most smitten by my bright and creamy yellow polish, Topaz Horizon! It's soooo ME—bright, bold, can't ignore and yet comforting and friendly.

Here are a few behind-the-scenes photos from the photo shoot of us bloggers (Nikki Tiu of AskMeWhats, Jackie Go of Go Jackie Go!, and Cristina Decena of Strutting on Sunshine).

Girlstuff launches their #BloggersEliteSummer collection in a fun party

It's been five weeks since I told you that I have a new nail polish color named after this fabulous blog. Have you gotten yourself a bottle of Girlstuff's Topaz Horizon yet?!? Please tell me you have a bottle of Topaz Horizon and you're wearing that fun and bold yellow hue on your nails!

I've been enjoying the various masterpieces that nail artists have been posting on Instagram using the #BloggersEliteSummer collection, which are four bright colors named after four fab blogs: AskMeWhats, Go Jackie Go, Strutting on Sunshine, and Topaz Horizon. I'd like to see your nails, too!

But I'll talk about those stunning nail art in another post. Right now, I want to share with you the party! It was so fun and cute and colorful and girly!
The media found this smorgasbord of treats!
I'm the yellow, Nikki Tiu is the pink.
My new friend Cristina Decena!
The party started with everyone getting nail art.
Here's mine! Topaz Horizon with an accent nail of confetti.
