Progress Pre-School Gold on multiple intelligences (plus, a giveaway!)

This post is brought to you by Progress Pre-School Gold.

When I was a preschool teacher lifetimes ago, I had the great privilege to teach at Ingenium School in Marikina. In 1999, Ingenium started as a preschool. Now it teaches kids up to high school level! I was one of the first of four teachers. It was a new kind of school, a multiple intelligences school. I've never heard of anything like it. But I truly saw how each child we taught blossomed because we taught them according to their strengths and interests, or multiple intelligence.

There are various forms of intelligence: brain, body, and people. I remember one student, J**i, who transferred to Ingenium because his teachers in his previous preschool said he had behavioral problems. We believe he was just bored! We observed him for a couple of weeks and noticed he just couldn't sit down, making it difficult for him (and us teachers) to learn anything!

Finally, one morning, I noticed he was running around the school. I yelled to him as he ran past, "One!" and he yelled back, "One!" When he passed me again, I yelled, "Two!" and he shouted back, "Two!" We did this counting with every lap. By the time he was tired, he had learned counting 1-20. Yes, he had a lot of energy! J**I is definitely body smart. That means he learns faster and better if he isn't sitting down. He has to be moving!

This multiple intelligences applied to the other kids. And, fast forward to now, I'm happy that I can apply it to my kids, too! For example, my second child, Iñigo, learns fastest through music. He learned his alphabet and numbers and shapes and colors and words simply by us singing them to him. We had tried that with his older brother, Vito, and Vito just wasn't interested. What Vito liked to do was visual play. He liked to sit with an iPad or watch TV or draw with paint and crayons. For him to learn, he has to see it unfolding before his eyes.

Vito loves visual stimulation.
Iñigo loves to learn through song and dance.
They both love learning via play!

Of course, parental involvement and encouragement are also huge factors in giving our children an edge with multiple intelligence. For example, a parent must discern what his child's intelligence is. In Vito's case, for example, the iPad works. It doesn't help Iñigo much unless he plays with an app that has a lot of music. But if a parent can't see beyond what traditional education says, then he or she'll just think, "Oh, all iPads are bad!" or "Something must be wrong with my kid because he doesn't like music!" or "Why is my kid so makulit and malikot? He must be naughty!"

Review (book): "StyLIZed" by Liz Uy & Vicky Montenegro

Okay, let's talk about that blog post title for a minute. Liz Uy's fabulous book on style (and yes, it is a very good book!) was actually written by another person. It said so twice in the book, and Liz said so herself while promoting the book. While I am sure the book was Liz's thing through and through, I just want to give credit where credit is due. And Liz did so, too! She was very thankful to Vicky!

So now that that's out of the way, let's do our review of StyLIZed!

First, let's talk about Liz. Liz is the stylist to the stars. She started as editorial assistant to fashion magazine Preview, then became known as John Lloyd's stylish girlfriend, then became part of the It Girls (Anne Curtis, Solenn Heusaff, Georgina Wilson, Belle Daza) group, then became wildly popular for going on dates with the President of the Republic of the Philippines. But what Liz is known for is her work—she's a stylist. And now she also has a book.

Second, this book is a year old na. I bought my copy last year. And it's a bestseller! So I'm hoping that means there are more of my readers who've read this book! Kasi the first pick for #TopazReads medyo isa lang ang nagbasa haha.

Third, my review! I love this book. It's actually more magazine than book but maybe I think that way because I've been reading Preview since 2002 and StyLIZed looks so much like the magazine that while I was reading it, I just had to think, "So is this how much Preview influenced Liz or is this how much Liz influenced Preview?!?"

My review then! What I love:

The focus of the book. The book is all about the ten style essentials that Liz believes every girl should have. These are a white V-neck shirt, a little black dress, blazer, slacks, white button-down shirt, leggings, jeans, tank top, shorts, and a pencil skirt. That's it. And then she shows you how to style these basic essentials so that you always have something to wear and you always look fresh and on-trend. It's very simple and straightforward.

The kinds of bags to wear with slacks, matched for any occasion.
The helpful tips and style tricks. One would think the above description wouldn't be enough to fill up an entire book, but because of the many styling suggestions (how to wear it on a weekday, on a weekend, to work, to play, etc), how to accessorize, how to give a basic piece second life, how to care for your clothes, how to find the style of a basic piece that suits your shape and personality, how celebrities—both local and Hollywood—wear the pieces, and soooo many more fascinating tips and tidbits, the book is just packed with chic goodies! It's super helpful talaga!

The editorial lineup. You know, if I'd done this book, I'd be consistent with each chapter, like so: closet piece, introduction, how to wear it on different occasions, how to accessorize it. That's it. But Liz, aside from that, came up with various extra topics per chapter: how to wear this piece on one chapter, the history of the piece in another chapter, undergarments for this piece in another chapter, etc etc! Hindi nakakasawa! Ang galing!

What I didn't love:
The celebrities. Okay, that's supposed to be one of the strengths of this book because, as a celebrity stylist, Liz of course should have a book presenting her star clientele. And she did. Luminous names like Kris Aquino, Anne Curtis, Marian Rivera, Sarah Geronimo, etc. adorn every chapter adorned in the style essential that Liz assigned to her. But that's it. Model lang si celeb. Sana there are other photos of her wearing the style essential—like Anne in a T-shirt sa bahay lang, or while shopping, or with a poufy skirt. Or Marian in a blazer with a sundress, or a shirt and ratty jeans, or with an evening gown. Like that ba! Diba mas masaya yun? Sa lagay, models lang sila so sana Liz just used models na lang talaga.
Plus, Liz always styles herself better than she does the celebs so sana si Liz na lang throughout!

The verdict? I think everyone should grab this book! It's a really good guide on the basic pieces you should have in your closet (although I have more to add: black heeled pumps, an A-line skirt, a classic watch, pearls, sunglasses!) and how to wear them so you look fabulous!!!

So! Did anyone else read Liz Uy's StyLIZed by Liz Uy and Vicky Montenegro? If yes, kindly leave your thoughts on the book in the comments section below. At 11 p.m. tonight, I'll be online for 30 minutes to respond to every comment and if you're also online, we can actually have a conversation! Do come chat with me tonight!

My lips try out the Happy Skin x Liz Uy lippies

Last month, three new shades were added to my ever-growing collection of lipsticks. The strange thing is I'm not a lipstick girl. So it took me a while to try these new colors. Now, they're all I wear!!!

Ladies, meet the Happy Skin x StyLIZed collection of Shut Up & Kiss Me Moisturizing Lippies:

StyLIZed is the brand of celebrity stylist Liz Uy (and don't forget that we're doing her book, StyLIZed,on Monday for our book club!). She says, “Lipstick is a fashion essential because it completes a woman’s look,” Liz explains. “Just like shoes, the right lip color can change your entire look.”

According to Liz, the right lip colors are: 24 CARATS (pink), RED CARPET (red), and STYLE ICON (nude). “These are my favorite lip colors that I consider fashion essentials to our kits,” says Liz. “This is for the woman who is independent, feminine and fashionable.”

Sounds like me! Let's see how they look on me.
The big photo is me without any lipstick on. Top is Style Icon, middle is Red Carpet, bottom is 24 Carats. They're all creamy and smooth to apply, feels amazing and like nothing on lips, and has staying power. My favorite is 24 Carats. It's a nice, bold pink. Feminine and yet not girly. It's not too obvious in the photo above that it's pink so here's a better photo (with better styled hair, too!)

I do love these new lippies. I wear them nearly every day! I can always match one to any outfit I wear. Definitely lipsticks you should get before stocks run out (they're limited edition!).

Plus, they're just P599 each. Very affordable! Plus, for every Happy Skin StyLIZed lippie sold, a portion of sales will go to Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation, Inc., which helps end poverty by restoring dignity to the poor through community building. Gawad Kalinga made an unforgettable impact on Liz while she was volunteering for relief operations in Tacloban to help victims of Typhoon Haiyan.

Happy Skin is available at Rustan’s Makati and Shangri-la, Beauty Bar, Plains & Prints, The SM Store Makati and Watson’s Mall of Asia Store GeNxt. Shop online at www.happyskincosmetics.com

Watch my Transitions lenses in action!

This post is brought to you by Transitions Signature Lenses.

My eyeglasses-wearing friends are asking me how my new Transitions® Signature™ Lenses work. They ask because we haven't seen each other in a while and we're all so busy we can't see each other so I have to do a blog post so I can show them how haha.

Okay, first, I want to just say why I got Transitions® Signature™ Lenses:

1. I don't have a lot of space in my bag because my kids' things are all stuffed in there. So it's such a convenience that I don't have to rummage about in my bag and switch glasses when it's super sunny because my prescription glasses can now shield my eyes from the sun's rays.

2. Unlike sunglasses which are a constant hue, my Transitions® Signature™ Lenses darken in reaction to the strength of the UV rays so as I exit a dark building and enter a bright spot, my glasses gradually darken. When clouds pass over the sun, my glasses adjust. So the way I see the world is not darkened by mega-dark tinted glasses. Colors stay vivid. And I can still see!

3. I also feel that the darkening/lightening is gentler on my eyes. With sunglasses, my eyes have to suddenly switch from light to dark and vice versa, which can be stressful to eyes. Did you know that when your eyes are tired, you get tired, too? With regular clear lenses and even sunglasses, eyes have to constantly adjust to changing light. The pupils dilate, you squint your eyes. It doesn't seem like much energy is expended with our eyes adjusting to the light, but over the course of the day, it does all add up, causing eyestrain and fatigue (and wrinkles!). Transitions® Signature™ Lenses filter the light so that my eyes don't have to work so hard. My eyes stay relaxed and comfy all day long!

4. When entering a tunnel, I don't need to take off my glasses!

Soooo cool. I love my glasses!!!

Ask your optometrist about Transitions® Signature™ Lenses. You can also check out their Facebook page for more information.

From BDJBox: My Tricks to Fuller-Looking Hair

I don’t have a lot of hair. What little hair I do have is fine, almost baby hair. So my crowning glory needs to be prodded and styled to look, well, glorious. Somehow, my little tricks seem to work because people ask me—a mom of three currently suffering from post-partum hair loss—how my hair seems so luscious! I reveal to you my simple secrets.

1. Use products, but not too many products.
FullerLookingHair1From start to end of your styling process, always choose products that will give your hair volume. Pay attention to labels with these words: thickening, volumizing, body, big, bouncy, fine. These will not weigh down your hair.
I never use conditioner since I find that it always makes my hair flat. I just use a treatment mask once or twice a month to nourish my locks. On regular days, I just use hair oil on the ends of my mane before I blow dry. On special days, I skip the oil and use a volumizing spray at the roots and mousse for the ends to give my hair body. Hairspray holds up the whole thing!
Don’t use sticky products, by the way, since these make hair clump together. That’s great if you have lots of hair but on fine, thin hair, clumps will just expose your scalp!
Plus, I always just use a small amount of product. I also use a maximum of two styling products at the same time because too much can weigh down everything.
FullerLookingHair22. Use tools.
Blow-drying hair is the biggest trick for big bouncy hair. It doesn’t even have to be salon-style. I just bend down, flip my hair upside down and blast on the dryer at my roots! Then, I roll up the still-warm locks in Velcro rollers. I keep my hair in rollers for as long as possible (while putting on makeup and dressing up, so about 15-20 minutes). When I free my hair of the rollers, I have a head full of gorgeous waves!
You can also use a curling iron for sexy waves. Just use the ones with big barrels for big, loose waves.
For the rest of my secrets to fuller-looking hair, visit BDJBox.com (click here!).

Hi readers! This month, I'm editing both my blogs to prepare for migration to Wordpress. So I won't be blogging much (except for my sponsors!). Because I don't want you to have nothing to read, I'm republishing my articles in BDJBox.com here. Enjoy my beauty news and reviews!

Breathtaking blue ball gown!

I'm a fan of Cinderella because unlike Sleeping Beauty and Snow White, Cinderella actually worked to make her dreams come true. Okay, so her dream was kinda lousy. But a dream is a wish your heart makes and she wished to become a princess so let's let her have it!

I like princesses, to be honest. I like Princess Grace and Princess Diana and Duchess Kate. Though I'm more of the girl who would rather say, "My dream is to be queen!" Still, if to become a princess first is how you get to be a queen, then I'll take it.

Back to Cinderelly. So there's a big movie coming out this month. I don't particularly care for it since Lily James is not winning me over (nope, not at all), but after seeing Ms James in this absolutely gorgeous Elie Saab Couture gown, I'm a convert. She looks ethereal. Like how I imagined princesses all my life!

That dress! I can't get over that dress!

I wish Kate Middleton would wear something like this. I know she buys her own clothes (she doesn't accept any gifts from brands and designers) so maybe she's just avoiding criticism by keeping her fashion simple. Elegant, of course, but still simple. I still dream of gowns like this Elie Saab will be worn by Kate while she's still young and princess-y!

My family got invited to the movie premiere and I'm excited to watch it now! Will you be watching the greatest fairy tale of all time?

Photo from Jezebel. Click it to see more photos of Lily's sumptuous dress, see-through shoes, and clock clutch!

Lost in your eyes

Watch.

Oy naiyak ako. I haven't stared into my husband's eyes since the kids were born. That's almost 5 years. Sometimes I feel like my marriage is under attack from my own kids, simply because their needs are so immediate, constant and urgent that I have no time to nurture my relationship with my husband.

I was looking for photos of Vince and me looking at each other and, no surprise here, I only found these at our wedding.

I mean, of course we look at each other. When we're talking. But that's it—we're talking. Or we're minding the kids, or eating, or working, watching TV, or we talk in bed in the dark. But we no longer just bask in each other's presence. There's really no time. We're lucky if we have seconds just to stare at each other. I can't imagine four minutes. Maybe I'll try 30 seconds later.

We have a good marriage, Vince and I, but if we don't watch it, we'll lose sight of each other. I'm going to look at Vince, really look at him, from now on.

My fave things at home

Real Living's website recently published this article on my favorite things at home (click the link to see my list!). The article came out in 2013. Two years later, the items on that list I gave to Real Living are still my favorite things!

Well, except for the favorite appliance. I love my microwave oven now. I refused to buy one for years and years, preferring to heat food on the stove or in the oven. But now that I have three kids, I just can't do it anymore! All the preparation then the pots to wash up after! So because I value my time more than anything now, my microwave oven is my favorite appliance now!

A super favorite thing that endures all these years is the photo wall. I love it. Vince loves it. The kids love it. Everyone who visits our house love it. There are more photos on that wall now. More happiness in my life! What a joy to have a reminder of how blessed I am just because I see this wonderful wall every day!

Every family should have a gallery of beautifully framed photos! You can buy inexpensive but nice picture frames from National Bookstore, Our Home and SM Department Store. That's where we buy ours. What we also do is buy framed prints at furniture shops, take out the generic print and put our photos in. That's the secret to our really nice frames. Or we ask for picture frames for Christmas so that people will get us expensive ones haha. Where else can we buy gorgeous photo frames?

Review: "#GirlBoss" by Sophia Amoruso

I seriously thought I wouldn't make it in time for our first ever #TopazReads book club meet because I was sick and then my whole family (husband and three babies!) got sick. I just didn't have the time or the energy to read Sophia Amoruso's bestselling book, #GIRLBOSS. Not to say it was a difficult read. It's actually a really easy, fast read. I just had a tough past few weeks, but I finally finished the book!

Sophia is the young woman who founded the e-commerce site Nasty Gal and built it in a few short years to a fashion empire worth millions of dollars. She wrote #GirlBoss to talk about that fantastic story and to inspire other #GirlBosses and would-be #GirlBosses. I picked up the book because I liked the cover. I'm not a dainty girl, I have a dirty mouth, and I like to stand with my hands on my hips. Sophia looked like a woman I'd get along with and I wanted to know her story. Thanks to my sister-in-law, Anj, who gave me this book for Christmas, I did!

Okay, my thoughts: #GirlBoss feels like a blog. The good thing about that is it's friendly and easy to read. The bad thing about that is the "Yey for girl power!" voice robs Sophia of authority. She grew Nasty Gal in her 20s (she's just 30 years old now) so she sounds very young and very excited. But her voice lacked gravitas. I hate to say that because this is a woman who is a massive success. You can't argue with that fact!

I guess my problem with #GirlBoss is it didn't know what it was supposed to be: an autobiography or a business book. It was both but it was too conversational to be business and too business-like to be a memoir. For example, the book rambles on and on about how she couldn't keep a job and how she never had enough money and then POW! She's making $150,000 a day!

Despite that feeling, I did enjoy the book mostly because she sounded a lot like me when I was in my 20s. Some quips I liked:
On how her eBay account became huge: "I also responded to every single comment that anyone left on my page. It just seemed like the polite thing to do. Many companies were spending millions of dollars trying to nail social media, but I just went with my instincts and treated my customers like they were my friends." p. 29
This is how I grew my blogs, too! Well, I didn't respond to EVERY comment (maybe I should!) but many of my friends now are people I met because of my blogs, simply because I had conversations with them. Then they linked me, shared my posts, blogged about me. That's how you succeed in anything really—build good relationships!

On shitty jobs: " I approached them with a sense of tourism and experimentation... I was just going to see where things went. When you approach everything as if it's a big, fun experiment, then it's not that big a deal if things don't work out." p. 65
Totally agree with this. Us Pinoys kasi are poor so our parents hammer into our brains, "What will you do for the rest of your life? Get a job that you will hold for at least 20 years. Marry a suitable person by 25. Have kids. Be happy." So committed!!! You all know I took my time! And while I loved my magazine job, I've realized now that it's just a job and if a job ends, it's not the end of my life. It was fun, blogging is fun, freelance writing is fun, but, hey, if it doesn't work out, then no tears, no fears! (I can't say this about marriage and motherhood, though. You have to make it work!)

On saving: "When your time spent making money is significantly greater than your time spent spending money, you will be amazed at how much you can save without even really thinking about it." p. 109
So true. I earn a lot less now than when I was employed but I have more savings now because I'm too busy being a mother and any spare time I get, I spend on work!

On spending: "You can't act like you've arrived when you're only receiving the invitation." p. 110
Translation: Don't buy anything you can't afford.

On keeping out negativity (especially nega people) out of your life: "When you think about people, you give them power." p. 126
Again, so true! I spent a lot of time hating people when I was younger. I may not care what they thought of me but I did wish them dead. All that hate and anger just made me ugly and unpleasant! Meanwhile, these people I hated, their lives flourished! When I decided to forgive and focus on the good, my life changed. Don't let the people who hate you, have hurt you, or the people you envy stay in your mind and your heart. Their presence will grow and grow till you can't function anymore! Kick them out!

On challenges: "Dive headfirst into things without being too attached to the results. When your goal is to gain experience, perspective, and knowledge, failure is no longer a possibility." p. 138
It's good to have goals, of course. But very specific goals (like, "I'll be head of the department at 25, own my house by 26, married at 27, have kids at 28, and retire at 30!") tend to become a to-do list. You focus too much on ticking things off the list that you forget to slow down, savor the climb to success, build friendships, take a look at the people around you. I did that ("I'll be EIC of a magazine at 32!" I became one at 30.), ticked off boxes, and failed to spend time with my mother. She's dead now so that's one regret I'll always have.

Okaaaaay, there's a lot more quotes by Sophia that I liked, but I also want to share this quote from one of the other #GirlBosses that Sophia featured in her book:
Alexi Wasser of IMBOYCRAZY.com: "I found that by sharing my personal experiences, like through my blog, we're not alone—that the most shameful, personal, specific things you're going through are actually universal. You can laugh about it. I want to make a contribution that matters, and I want to be as vulnerable and raw as possible so other people feel less alone."
That's how blogging is for me!

So! Did anyone else read #GirlBoss by Sophia Amoruso? If yes, kindly leave your thoughts on the book in the comments section below. At 11 p.m. tonight, I'll be online for 30 minutes to respond to every comment and if you're also online, we can actually have a conversation! Do come chat with me tonight!

Denim on denim on denim

My inbox is flooded with press releases and ads of brands' new collections and campaigns. And I dunno... I'm not a fan of this denim overkill.

Calvin Klein

Tommy Hilfiger

Colcci

Mango
Diesel

But, hey, if you look good in denim overdose, then don't let me stop you! I'd do it, too, if I looked as good as any of the models above!

My favorite new cool thing: my eyeglasses' Transitions lenses!

This post is brought to you by Transitions Signature Lenses.

Posted this over at my Instagram because I am sooo in love with my new Transitions® Signature™ Lenses!

Because I'm nearsighted, I've been wearing glasses for 25 years. It's safe to say that I have a huge interest in all things glasses. For many people, glasses are just an accessory. For me, my life depends on them! So anytime I see an ad on eyewear or an article on lens technology or optical shop sales, I am there!

Last year, I was so excited when Transitions® Signature™ Lenses approached me and said they're here in the Philippines! I have longed for lenses that react to sunlight for the longest time! Transitions® Signature™ lenses are the most responsive adaptive lenses, developed from Transitions Optical’s latest patented Chromea7™ technology and tested with an exclusive measurement methodology, Life360™. Lots of big names and patents and trademarks there, no?! This is because these lenses are the BEST!!!

And now I own a pair!!!

I'm so lucky!

WHAT IS IT?
I hope all those big words didn't make your eyes glaze over. To break it down, here's what you need to know:
1. This technology can be used on any prescription. Whether mataas ang grado ng mata mo or mababa, pwede siyang gamitin!
2. Transitions® Signature™ Lenses are not sunglasses. They are activated by UV light. So they don't darken when indoors and at night. They're clear. Like any normal sunglasses!
3. Because they react to the strength of the sun's rays, you get different levels of darkness. So if it's cloudy, it darkens a little lang. If the glare is super bright, didilim talaga siya. So kahit pabago-bago pa ang weather (sunny one minute, then cloudy the next) at kahit saan ka pa magpunta (lunch out tapos biglang papasok sa dark building), you won't need to remove your glasses.

HOW DO I USE IT?

Topaz Reads: Discussing #GirlBoss on Feb 16!

When I suggested a book club over at my Facebook page and Instagram, I got enthusiastic support from a few readers. Like, maybe three readers haha but that's okay! I figured it's easier to discuss a book with a few people than say a hundred, right, so here it is! I'm officially announcing the first ever book for the #TopazReads book club: #GirlBoss by Sophia Amoruso.

I'm in the middle of it now and I won't spoil my review but I will tell you a bit about the book.

#GirlBoss is the autobiography of Sophia Amoruso, so, yeah, it's a non-fiction book. Sophia is the CEO of Nasty Gal, a multi-million dollar clothing company that started on eBay selling stolen goods. Wait. What? Yes, she was a thief and that's why I wanted to read it—I wanted to know how someone who used to be a crook reformed herself and got rewarded by millions of dollars! I like that the straight-and-narrow road has financial rewards.

The book came out last year and enjoyed success because—and this is my opinion—there were books like Lean In and celebrities like Emma Watson and social media movements like #YesAllWomen. I am all for feminism and raising awareness on women empowerment so I was happy to choose a book that puts "girl" and "boss" in its title. I just hope it's a good book!

So anyway! That's all I'll say now. The book review will be published here on Feb. 16, Monday. Then I'll be online at 11 PM to chat with you live. Well, if any of you are still awake at that time! Sorry, readers, I'm a mama and I can only work late at night! My guess is no one will chat with me haha.

To participate in the live chat, just visit TopazHorizon.com on Feb. 16, Monday, read my review, then leave your questions/reactions/agreements/disagreements on the comments section. At 11pm (+8 GMT), I will go live and reply to every comment that I publish. If you're online at the same time, we can have a real chat! The chat will last just 30 minutes because it's already rather late in the night, but I think it will be fun!

So please pencil the date in your calendars and see you back here on Monday, Feb. 16, for the very first #TopazReads edition!

#GirlBoss by Sophia Amoruso is available at Fully Booked.

Bedside carafe

Help meeeee!

I really really want a personal carafe on my bedside table (because for the first time in all my 38 years, I now have a bedside table!). I get so thirsty in the middle of the night sometimes. I have a KOR water bottle, which is really nice, but now that I have a bedside table, I really think a carafe should be on it! I like the bedside ones, it's just a small bottle with a cover that doubles as a drinking glass. I just don't know where to buy a nice one.

I found a few on eBay:

I like them all, but I do like Drink Me best because I'm an Alice in Wonderland fan. Trouble is all these carafes are abroad. If I do buy one, I'm afraid it will get broken while it's on its way to me!

Does anyone know where I can buy one here in Manila? Thanks!!!

Review: Xiaomi Redmi 1S (a guest post!)

Today, I'm giving my readers the very first guest post on Topaz Horizon. Ever. This contributor has actually written three guest posts on Topaz Mommy so he's no stranger to my blogs. Everyone, please welcome Vince Sales. I'm okay with him writing on my blog because I have this massive crush on him. But don't tell him that! (Photo captions are mine.)

Guest post from Topaz Daddy here. Frances said she couldn’t do this review, so she pulled me out of tech journalist retirement (yeah, I used to be one) to review the Xiaomi Redmi 1S that everyone’s been talking about lately. I haven’t written a gadget review in ages, so I will keep it short and sweet. No tech jargon here, just the fun stuff!
It's a really nice phone. Simple, sleek, solid, good weight. Feels good to hold.

What’s the fuss?
If you’ve never heard of Xiaomi before, the story so far goes something like this: So, like, you know, there’s a company called Xiaomi that’s like the Apple of China. And, like, the phones they make are really really good. And dude, they’re like super cheap, like half the price of what you’d expect. There’s the Mi 3 that goes for just P10,599; so awesome. Then there’s the P5,599 Redmi 1S that’s like a mid-range phone with an entry-level price. Totally cray-cray.

So is it all too good to be true? Should you get a Redmi 1S? And what about the selfies? Scroll down to find out.

The Screen
Like most smart phones nowadays, the screen on the Redmi 1S is honking big. They squeezed a 4.7-inch screen in there, and it can go toe-to-toe with other big screens from more high-end phones, like the iPhone 6’s 4.7-inch screen (but not the 6 Plus’ 5.5-inch screen). Beside the iPhone 5’s itty bitty 4-incher, the Redmi looks like it’s from the future.

Very bright and clear screen. And it's survived falls, too.

The Build
If you’re looking for a shiny metal obelisk, you’re looking in the wrong place. This isn’t the steel Mi 3 or an aluminum iPhone. The Redmi 1S is made of plastic. This is not an entirely bad thing. It doesn’t feel as rich as top-of-the-line Samsungs or iPhones, but the plastic doesn’t feel cheap at all while keeping the phone light and strong (and cheap). And it can do something that most other smart phones can’t: you can change the back casing. The Happy Chinese New Year red case actually looks pretty darn good.
Dahil Chinese New Year na, the red one is just perfect for the season!
Redmi vs iPhone 5s

The Battery Life
I am told that battery life that lasts for more than a day is a good thing. That would make the Redmi 1S’ battery life pretty good because I normally got through a day without charging. I am not a very heavy user of phones. Your mileage may vary.

Living with Android and MIUI
The Redmi 1S runs Android with the highly-acclaimed and controversial MIUI slapped on top of it. Everything they said about it is true. It’s brilliant. It works like a dream. It feels like iOS, and it copies features from all the right places.

I’ve been an iOS user for most of my smart phone life and MIUI has won me over. This is mostly because (in the Philippines at least) MIUI integrates brilliantly with Google services, plus a hundred tiny little things that are too many to mention. I like how it handles notifications. I like how you can choose to prioritize Wi-Fi over cellular data. I like the different colored LEDs that tell you what kind of alert you’re getting. I like the automatic over-the-air downloads. I like that it’s dual SIM. And so on. So, yeah. I like it.

The Camera
Once you have a proper camera (like my pride and joy Olympus), camera phone pictures all look lousy to you. So I was surprised to find out that the pictures from the Redmi 1S were surprisingly good. I’ll let you judge for yourself.

Some selfies from the front camera.

Macro.

You don’t get the control of an SLR, but you can select focus, which is good. And also the LED illuminator actually lights things up nicely when your subject is in range. I didn’t even notice the LED illuminator was going off most of the time, but the shots still came out looking natural and not harshly lit.

Redmi for you? For me?
I found a lot to like with the Redmi and precious little to dislike. Big screen, great camera, MIUI, and that price (PHP5,599)! Be still my heart. It’s hard to find a better deal than that.

For that price though, you should know that you don’t get LTE nonsense or metal construction, and you don’t get a bleeding edge processor. But if you’re looking for something more fancy, you’ll probably want to trade up to the Mi 3 (or the Mi 4 if you can find one). For most people, there’s plenty of smart phone right here for an outrageous price.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert de Niro and Martin Scorsese in Manila!

Well, technically, in City of Dreams.

May budget!!! Vanity Fair says each actor was paid $13 million for this series of Scorsese-directed ads for the spankin' brand new casino by the bay. Wow. I did not know First World levels na pala ang Pinas! I'm thrilled and flabbergasted and shocked and in disbelief and wowed and amazed and horrified all at the same time!

But DiCaprio and de Niro and Scorsese! What. The. What! I'm suddenly wanting to go to City of Dreams!

Game of Thrones on the cello

I cried. It's so good! And I miss #GoT.

Put your volume on full blast and take a listen.

My brother, Theodore, who is the cellist (and big boss) of Manila String Machine (the hottest string quartet in the country!!!), also have #GoT on their repertoire but they should totally do a video like this!

Yellow love at the Golden Globes

My favorite look at the Golden Globes 2015 red carpet was Emma Stone's Lanvin jumpsuit.

Absolutely stunning that girl is. Just breathtaking, I also loved the looks of Diane Kruger, Ellie Kemper and Felicity Jones. But my favorite look, right after Emma's, is Naomi Watts in her yellow Gucci dress, Bulgari snake neckpiece, and red lip.
I love yellow on the red carpet. Anyone who wears yellow just pops out of that ruby floor. But yellow is tricky to wear because if you choose the wrong shade, your skin will look sallow or the yellow won't photograph well.

That problem is not a problem with these beauties:
In 2007, new mom (well, birth mom) Angelina Jolie took a break from her black wardrobe to surprise everyone at Cannes in this uncharacteristically sunny Ungaro.

Emma again standing out on the red carpet and so perfect in last year's Amazing Spider-Man promo tour. Soooo in love with this Atelier Versace dress with a million tiny pleats.

In 2006, Michelle Williams looked so delicate and feminine in Vera Wang. This dress was supposed to be a canary yellow but in photos, it always looks orange!

My favorite yellow look of all time is Reese Witherspoon's yellow Nina Ricci cocktail dress which she wore in 2007 while in the midst of divorcing Ryan Phillippe. You'd never think she was going through a tough time looking at how perfect she was here!

In fact, I loved Reese's look soooo much, she was my peg for this dress and photo!
Walang aangal. Walang kokontra! Pagbigyan niyo 'ko!

Yes, as in pagkakita ko kay Reese, I went out and asked my mother-in-law's kusturera to make a version of that dress (with Vince's design input since back then, childless me had the flattest chest so the sweetheart neckline won't work)!

Yellow is so unexpected, that's why it gets attention. Sigh. Must bring the sunshine back to my dreary mommy wardrobe of grays and blacks!
